Microadventure: Urban AMS

Following Alastair Humpreys’ Microadventure concept, I did an urban journey around our home (a 2.pi.r + 2r trip) at a distance of 1 km from home. I planned things out at home on the computer to generate a set of 16 waypoints 1 km distance from home and loaded them up on my trusty Garmin Oregon 450 GPS.

Actually I tried this several weekends ago but a gear malfunction on my hiking shoes stopped me after a couple of kilometers (the offending boots have been replaced with a pair of Lowa Focus GTX Lo shoes; very nice). The weather today was much better anyway: +6 degrees C and sunny.

The hike took me to some interesting places including the Funenpark urban development area. I also found that the urban geography of the area often makes it difficult to travel an uniform circumference; the most challenging was the Wittenburg and Eastern Docklands areas where I had to backtrack a couple of times.

All in all, a very enjoyable morning spent outdoors and I’m already looking forward to the 2 km circumference trip.
