{"id":7017,"date":"2020-11-08T08:39:09","date_gmt":"2020-11-08T13:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/?p=7017"},"modified":"2024-11-03T16:29:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-03T21:29:30","slug":"25-km-from-wtf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/25-km-from-wtf\/","title":{"rendered":"25 km from WTF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebebeb\"><em>You can find posts about my <strong>25 km from WTF<\/strong> adventures <em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/category\/25km-from-wtf\/\">here<\/a><\/em><\/em><\/em> <br><em>or visualize them on this <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/edit?mid=1Eo5IU12sEHZFhl88EwjB-hLiFI5Qe3xv&amp;usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been a fan of the adventurer <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/alastairhumphreys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Humphrey<\/a> and his <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/alastairhumphreys.com\/year-microadventure\/\" target=\"_blank\">microadventure<\/a> concept for many years now. I&#8217;ve even designed and executed a number of them (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/microadventure-bolwerken\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microadventure: Bolwerken<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/urban_amsterdam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microadventure: Urban AMS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/microadventure-to-white-tree-farm\/\">Microadventure to White Tree Farm<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His recent &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/alastairhumphreys.com\/a-single-map-is-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Single Map is Enough<\/a>&#8221; post struck a chord with me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;And so I have decided to explore a single map. To look for the things that matter to me closer to my front door than ever before: adventure, nature, weather, wildness, exercise, surprises, silence, new people, wanderlust, and curiosity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t yet know what is the highest point on my map, the most remote, or the most beautiful bathing spot but I do know two things: firstly that they won\u2019t be as impressive as on other maps and, secondly, that I will nonetheless enjoy finding them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Al Humphrey<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This got me thinking how we could do something similar here. Unfortunately I don&#8217;t think Canada has a nice personalized map making service like the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk\/custom-made\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British OS<\/a> provides. And given that our new house is located right on the edge of Lake Erie, a map centered around it would be 50% water. So I decided to lay out a circle 25 km from our house at <a href=\"https:\/\/whitetreefarm.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White Tree Farm<\/a> in a GPX file and use that  overlayed on a Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/about\/mymaps\/\">MyMap<\/a> as my single map equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off the top of my head, here are some of the interesting places to see within this area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/en\/lhn-nhs\/on\/southwold\">Southwold Earthworks National Historic Site<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elginstewardshipcouncil.com\/natural-areas\/fingal-wildlife\/\">Fingal Wildlife Management Area<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontarioparks.com\/park\/johnepearce\">John E.
