It had been on our list of places to visit for some time.<\/p>\n<p>We planned to make the trip on only three types of transport:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Dutch train system (Amsterdam Centraal to Den Helder and return).<\/li>\n<li>The TESO Ferry (Den Helder to Texel and return).<\/li>\n<li>Our own bikes for everything else.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As always, I planned to document our trip with photos. \u00a0I took only my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/gear-sony-rx-100-camera\/\">Sony DSCRX100<\/a> with us as I wanted to keep to a minimal gear set up this time.<\/p>\n<h3>Day 1: Amsterdam to De Koog<\/h3>\n<p>I took the Friday afternoon off work and we departed our house in Amsterdam just after 2:30 pm. I actually had both rear panniers filled on my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/index.php\/notebook\/gear-santos-travelmaster\/\">Santos Travelmaster<\/a>\u00a0for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Departing Amsterdam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stationstudios\/28623741731\/in\/album-72157671769138216\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8786\/28623741731_fcb28f1b35_c.jpg\" alt=\"Departing Amsterdam\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Departing Amsterdam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stationstudios\/28595683882\/in\/album-72157671769138216\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8851\/28595683882_42c1d8447a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Departing Amsterdam\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Arriving at Amsterdam Centraal Station, we took our bikes up on to the platform and loaded them onto the Intercity train to Den Helder. The train was reasonably empty and we could sit close to the bikes for the one-hour journey.<\/p>\n<p>We next had a short cycle from the train station to the ferry terminal. As always, the Dutch cycling pathway system was well marked and we quickly made to the terminal to await the next ferry.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Waiting for the Ferry, Den Helder\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stationstudios\/28595686712\/in\/album-72157671769138216\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/8\/7537\/28595686712_2f4290fb1d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Waiting for the Ferry, Den Helder\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ferry trip is a short one, only about 15 minutes of traveling time. Coming off the ferry in Het Horntje, we had a straightforward cycle to our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotelcooghen.nl\/\">hotel<\/a> in De Koog. Cycling northeast out of De Koog, our first stop was a visit to\u00a0de Slufter, a failed polder that has been allowed to reconnect to the North Sea. A good portion of the ride was through\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npduinenvantexel.nl\/\">Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel<\/a>. There are\u00a0frequent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ns.nl\">NS<\/a>\u00a0trains between Den Helder and Amsterdam Centraal. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teso.nl\/en\/\">TESO<\/a> ferry runs every 30 minutes in the spring, summer and fall months.
