In the end, we decided on London; it had been several years since we were last there. We decided to stay in an area that neither of us had spent a lot of time before: the old Roman City of London.

We started with a reasonably comfortable flight time of 10:50 am to fly from Schiphol to London City airport. After a quick flight of 40 minutes, we were quickly through customs and grabbed our one luggage bag. Using purchased Oyster passes for the weekend to speed up our travel on the Tube , we traveled west along the Docklands Light Railway to the Tower Gateway stop and then walked the final 500 meters to our base of operations, the Apex City of London hotel. The Apex turned out to be a great place to stay, with many interesting sights just steps from the front door and easy transportation options nearby. Lunch was next on the agenda. We stopped at the Brassiere Blanc where Robin had an avocado and pork salad and I treated myself to a big bowl of steamed mussels in a saffron mouclade. Dessert was even better: the final serving of the chef’s special: Crepes Suzette, flambéd at our table. Refreshed and fortified, we picked up our cameras from the hotel and walked along the Thames, crossing Tower Bridge (pictured above) then walking west along the south side of the river. We crossed back north at London Bridge and walked past the Monument before stopping at the Walrus and Carpenter pub for an ale. We also took some time to explore St Olave Hart Street church which our hotel room overlooked. St Olave is one of the few churches from medieval times to survive the Great Fire of London in 1666. We decided to take our dinner at the hotel in their Addendum restaurant.

On Saturday morning, we enjoyed a bit of a lie-in before having breakfast. Our goal of the day was to visit the National Gallery so we could continue our run of seeing as many Dutch Old Master paintings as possible. The National Gallery did not disappoint with a good selection of Rembrandts, Cuyps, Vermeers and Rusydaels. The van Goghs, Monets, Constables and Turners weren’t bad either. We then headed out towards Convent Market to find some lunch, at a time when many others had the same idea. We ended up walking up a little further than we originally planned before having a nice Italian lunch at Strada (sharing both a Burrata e Prosciutto di Parma and a Vesivuo pizza). We had hoped to visit the Sir John Soane museum on Lincoln’s Inn Fields at the end of the day but it was very busy and with closing time rapidly approaching we decided to leave it for another trip. Feeling full from our late lunch, we decided to skip dinner and instead had a late-night cocktail and some nibbles at the hotel bar.

We awoke on Sunday to improving weather and decided to do a guided walk. We selected the “Famous Square Mile – 2000 Years of History” walk from London Walks as the starting point was just a short walk from the hotel. We had a small group and an excellent guide who showed us many of the hidden treasures of the old City of London. Highlights were Leadenhall Market, the new Lloyd’s of London building, 20 Fenchurch and the Guildhall. We stopped for a pub lunch at Ye Olde Watling pub, which Christopher Wren used as a drawing office during the construction of St Paul’s. In the evening, we visited with some good friends who live near Wimbledon. They served a classic Easter Sunday dinner and we caught up on each others’ activities over the past year and a half. Very enjoyable.

Having enjoyed the Sunday walk so much, we decided to do another on our last morning. This time, we did “Darkest Victorian London“, which concentrated on the south side of the Thames. With the focus on Victorian England, this walk helped Robin and I better understand the conditions in England in the 1850’s that sent our ancestors over the ocean to Canada to seek better lives. Again, there were many interesting sights including Borough Market, Park Street (a well preserved set of shops and houses from the 1800’s), Crossbones burial ground and the George Inn, the only surviving coaching inn in London. This was another great walk and recommend it highly. We had a classic fish-and-chips lunch at Fish! in Borough Market. We then walked back to the hotel, grabbed our luggage and headed out to the airport for an uneventful trip home.

Another great weekend trip!

Visit the photo set 2015: London on Flickr.
