{"id":3102,"date":"2012-04-25T18:21:48","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T22:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/?p=3102"},"modified":"2024-11-17T08:42:35","modified_gmt":"2024-11-17T13:42:35","slug":"copenhagen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stationstudios.ca\/blog\/copenhagen\/","title":{"rendered":"Photo Set: Copenhagen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Visit the photo set <a title=\"2012: Copenhagen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stationstudios\/sets\/72157629527234556\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Copenhagen<\/a> on Flickr.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Probably feeling the winter blues, Robin and I booked a three-day weekend trip to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copenhagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Copenhagen<\/a> even before we started our Caribbean cruise. Never mind that I had made plans several months before to run a 10K race in Hilversum; this trip kept my series of short work weeks intact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the first time for us, we flew out of Amsterdam to our destination; all previous trips were by train. We left around noon Amsterdam time with only three pieces of hand luggage and by 2:00 pm we were making our way out of the Copenhagen airport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The airport is connected to the city center by the metro, so after figuring out how to buy tickets, we were downtown at the Kongens Nytorv, one of the main squares, in only 15 minutes. Our hotel, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoenixcopenhagen.dk\/\">Hotel Phoenix<\/a>, was a short five minute walk away and it proved to be a convenient place to see the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After dropping our luggage, we returned to the Nyhavn district where we hopped abroad one of the canal tour boats to get a good overview of the city. It was a chilly ride around due to the low temperatures and stiff winds. Afterwards, we stopped for a hot chocolate and a beer inside at <a href=\"http:\/\/mcjoys.dk\/\">Mcjoys<\/a>. Dinner was a very nice Italian meal at Casa D&#8217;Antini; three courses based around fish and shellfish, with which we matched a nice Soave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The weather on Saturday morning was similar to Friday evening: cool and threatening rain. We decided to walk north from the hotel up Bredgade towards the Kastellet. As we often do, we took our time stopping to photograph various buildings like the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick's_Church\">Marble Church<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Nevsky_Church,_Copenhagen\">Russian Orthodox Church<\/a>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kastellet,_Copenhagen\">Kastellet<\/a> itself is a well-preserved fortification that is still used by the Danish military and was surrounded by park land filled with in-bloom cherry trees. This made for some very photogenic scenes. Unfortunately, it started to rain at this point so our visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Little_Mermaid_%28statue%29\">Little Mermaid<\/a> was brief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The rain continued to torment us as we walked south towards the older parts of the city. We finally took refuge in the Konditori Antoinette where we had a small lunch and hot drinks to warm up. We were pleased to see the sun finally come out as we left the cafe. We ended up walking up some of the larger pedestrian streets and found ourselves after awhile at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rundet%C3%A5rn\">Round Tower<\/a>. The Round Tower was built in the 1600&#8217;s as astronomical observatory which it still in use today. The photography opportunities inside the tower were excellent and we ended up spending an hour poking around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the tower, we visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faraos.dk\/Webshop\/Information\/koebenhavnGames\">Faraos Cigarer<\/a> game store where Robin discovered that there are Carcassonne expansions that we don&#8217;t own. Finally we stopped by the <a href=\"http:\/\/natmus.dk\/en\/\">National Museum<\/a> where we walked through several thousand years of history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Completely tired, we returned to the hotel to freshen up and headed out to dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mashsteak.dk\">MASH<\/a> (Modern American Steak House). Robin and I were both very impressed with the restaurant from the cocktails (a bourbon sour for me, a margarita for Robin), to the charcuterie, to the steaks with onion rings and mac and cheese.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sunday&#8217;s weather was very similar to Saturday. Breakfast at the hotel was even more busy than Saturday and we just barely got a table. We spent several hours at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smk.dk\/en\/\">Staten Museum for Kunst<\/a> and enjoyed their 1900-1930 French and 1800-1930 Danish collections. We poked around the Botanisk Have and their lovely outdoor gardens as well, until once again the rain started. We ducked into a branch of the Baresso coffee chain, where Robin had the best hot chocolate ever. Then to the hotel to pick our luggage and start the journey home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All in all, we really enjoyed Copenhagen and would certainly visit again; there are still many attractions to see.
