My good friend, Randy Segato, flew over from Canada to spend a weekend joining me on a weekend to see our favorite band, Rush<\/a>, twice in three days on the European leg of their 2011 Time Machine Tour.<\/p>\n

On Friday, we along with two colleagues from work saw Rush at the Ahoy in Rotterdam. After a late evening of riding the trains back from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, Randy and I boarded the late afternoon ICE to travel to Frankfurt, where Rush was playing on Sunday. We checked into the Hotel Concorde<\/a>, our base of operations for the weekend. After stowing our stuff, we went out to explore the downtown area and to find some dinner. We were a little surprised how much more grim Frankfurt’s red light area was in comparison to, say, Amsterdam. But we quickly passed though it and in the downtown area. It was a beautiful evening to be outside and we grabbed some dinner at the Cafe Hauptwache<\/a>. I had Weiner Schnitzel and Randy had an asparagus dish; a couple of large German beers completed the dinner. <\/p>\n

The highlight of the evening was the Jazzkeller<\/a>, where we went and caught two sets of a local jazz quartet that was just releasing a new CD. <\/p>\n

Sunday morning, we grabbed some breakfast and our cameras and went on a photo tour by the river Messe and the old city center. We stopped for another good German meal in the downtown area, this time surrounded by plenty of German Rush fans in for the concert. Randy chatted up the table next to ours; turned out to be the German Rush fan club.<\/p>\n

We almost didn’t make it to the concert in time. In Rotterdam, the doors opened at 6:45 for 7:30 pm start. The only time on the Frankfurt tickets was 6:30 which we erroneously assumed to be doors-opening time, so we took our time in getting to the venue. We had just grabbed a beer and taken our seats when the lights went down to start the concert. The crowd was awesome and the concert probably the best of the three we had seen on the Time Machine Tour, perhaps because it was the end of the European leg of the tour.<\/p>\n

The concert over, we spilled into the streets with the other fans and had one last beer turning in. I headed back to Amsterdam on Monday (and back to work) while Randy continued on his holiday to Italy. A great start to summer in Europe in 2011!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
