Although I’ve passed it everyday now since moving to the Plantage neighborhood two years ago, I’ve never visited de Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. De Hortus is one of the oldest botanic gardens in the world. Robin and I rectified that on a lovely Sunday afternoon.
De Hortus has handouts describing several walking routes as a means to see their collection. We decided to take the Tree route as we have been discussing what trees to grow at our new farm. We enjoyed poking around the grounds, taking photographs of the plants, trees and buildings and learning more about the various trees in their collection. Many of the specimens in De Hortus’ collection have been growing there for over 100 years.
After we had a nice lunch at the museum café, we visited the large three-zone greenhouse housing tropical, desert and temperate climates and the many unique specimens of plants from each of these zones.
All in all, a very nice way to spend an afternoon.
