One of our most anticipated events during the cruise was an evening at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. It just so happened that the annual Scarlet Sails event had also been rescheduled for the same evening. Scarlet Sails is the graduation event for Russian high school students and 35,000 of them descend on St Petersburg every June, the highlight being a huge fireworks display late in the evening. Almost a million people line the major waterways in central St Petersburg for the show, which made our trip to the museum more than a little challenging logistically. I took this picture on our bus heading back to the ship at 11:15 pm, with people still streaming into the downtown area for the fireworks. To see what we missed, check out the pictures and video of the fireworks that started an hour or so after we went through.
